The City of Jacksonville Florida is seeking a veterinarian to work in our Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) division. This position reports to the Chief of Animal Care & Protective Services. The primary purposes of this position are to examine and triage animals entering the facility, develop and oversee appropriate treatment plans for animals requiring emergency or ongoing medical care, perform surgeries, monitor the health and care of animals housed at the shelter, and act in the capacity of an expert witness in court cases.
Examples of Work include:
Performs high volume (averaging 15-25/day) spay/neuter and alternative surgeries.
Prescribes and performs treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination and other medical care.
Advises the Chief and other managers in areas of veterinary medicine.
Performs and/or interprets results from necropsies for criminal cases; and testifies to same as needed.
Researches medical literature to develop and review standard operating procedures.
Communicate with the AC&PS Shelter Manager and partner facilities to arrange transport for diagnostics and/or continued care for critically injured or debilitated animals.
Be available for after-hours assistance for Animal Code Enforcement Officers and Veterinary Technician staff as needed to advise/assist with treatment decisions for critically injured or debilitated animals.
OPEN REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
The Veterinarian shall be a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine,
Must have at least two years of professional experience, at least one year of which should be work experience in a public shelter or high volume spay/neuter clinic.
Possession of a Shelter Medicine Certificate from an accredited institution may be accepted in lieu of professional experience.
DEA License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment.
Must be licensed by the State of Florida to practice veterinary medicine prior to appointment and maintain said license during employment with the City of Jacksonville.
A valid state Driver's License is required prior to employment and must be maintained.
Must qualify prior to employment, obtain and maintain during employment a City of Jacksonville Public Driver Certification.
